The UNEA4 side event on Strengthening the Global Momentum to tackle Plastic Pollution was hosted by the Canadian Embassy, Ministry of Environment & Forestry, NEMA, KEPSA Foundation (Sustainable Inclusive Business Kenya) and the Kenya Association of Manufacturers. This was a follow up on the side event Building the Global Momentum on Marine/ Aquatic Plastics Litter during the Sustainable Blue Economy Conference. The focus of the meeting was to look at the global perspective on plastics, implementation/action- on Kenyan experience on plastics and to showcase some of the good practice example initiatives in Kenya and around the world.

The side event brought together key leaders from governments, the private sector and civil society to highlight leadership, best practices, and innovative social and technological solutions in support of the Ocean Plastics Charter and in line with the recommendations of the outcome of the Sustainable Blue Economy Conference. The focus of the meeting was to share the global perspective on plastics, look at how best to practically implement the Oceans Plastic Charter and look at Kenyan experiences in tackling plastics by showcasing good practice examples.

Companies were invited to sign the Ocean Plastic Charter, committing towards; Sustainable Design, Production and After-use Markets; Collection, Management and other Systems and Infrastructure; Sustainable Lifestyles and Education; Research Innovation and New Technologies; and, Coastal and Shoreline Action. This charter has already been signed with Sustainable Inclusive Business (KEPSA Foundation), KAM, Ministry of Env. & Forestry, Bidco, Cocacola, PETCO and Sunworld Safaris.
